DDR5 RAM Failures:  Testing and Prevention

When you build a workstation for engineering and design, most of the attention goes toward the processor and graphics card. However, RAM, also referred to as memory, is just as important to the overall stability and performance of the system—and when it fails, the entire workstation can become unreliable. 

Recently, we’ve seen an increase in RAM failures during workstation testing, including memory that fails under standard diagnostic testing while known-good memory passes in the same system. For engineers and AEC professionals working with applications like Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other demanding workloads, unstable memory can lead to crashes, corrupted files, lost productivity, and difficult-to-diagnose system problems.  

When we are testing memory, we use a tool called MemTest86. This is a dedicated memory diagnostic tool designed to test memory outside of the Windows operating system. This allows us to put the memory through a series of tests designed to identify errors that may not be obvious during normal computer use. The test we run is great at catching the one-off issues we see with memory, but more recently, we have had large batches of memory failing. When we run into issues like this, we will use the manufacturer's recommended testing procedures and test the memory in other known-good computers to rule out other potential issues.  

Once we learn that a memory kit is defective, we begin the RMA process with the manufacturer or supplier. We document the failures and provide the necessary testing information so the defective memory can be returned and replaced. When dealing with larger batches of failed memory, this process can become more involved, especially when multiple kits need to be replaced.   

Receiving replacement memory isn't the final step. Before we put the replacement RAM into a customer's workstation, we test it again to make sure it is stable and passing our memory tests. This extra step helps us catch potential problems before the workstation reaches the customer and helps ensure that the system is ready for demanding engineering workloads. 

RAM may be a small part of a workstation, but its reliability can have a big impact on the entire system. By thoroughly testing memory and replacing failures before a workstation reaches the customer, we can help ensure a stable and reliable system for heavy work use.
